New Yarn Shipment

I finally got the beautiful yarn I ordered from NeedleFood just before it closed. It had been a touch delayed owing to the recent earthquakes in Christchurch, but it finally made it over the ditch, and I was glad to hear the owner and her family were safe and well.

I had gone a little nuts and ordered six yarns. I figured, when would I have this opportunity again? They were closing after all! But the one I was most looking forward to was called Pukeko. (second from the right – not visible on the blog *headdesk* I’m working on it!)

Named after a small blue swamp hen, and having the same colours as it’s namesake, I had met one of these birds only last xmas when visiting New Zealand.

As is the way with hand dyes yarns, the colours are given to pooling in often unflattering ways when knitted into a garment. There are several ways you can combat this when it’s not the effect you’re after. Knitting from both ends of the same ball each alternate row springs to mind. But that wasn’t what I wanted to do.

Having seen a few other peoples projects in this yarn on Ravelry, I knew it would be a LOUD knit, and I wasn’t let down!

But I found a pattern where you carry the yarn and then pick it up again in later rows, thus creating a visual break in the pooling. It’s called Leyburn Socks and it’s by Minty Fresh.

On the left you see the bottom of one sock and the pooling effect of the colours in the yarn. On the right, the top of the foot with the carried yarn.

I think it works well!

In which we go shopping with purpose

This weekend Spring finally felt like it had loosened the stranglehold of Winter. With the sun shining, and the earth feeling like it was waking up from a long night’s sleep, I felt the urge to spring clean the house, and prepare for party season!

So instead of clearing and cleaning, we began backwards and went to the local nursery!

Look at all the beautiful plants!!!

So much potential!

Oh, and of course we’ll definitely need a water feature.

With a crocodile.

Next week, the hard yards of clearing space for the new acquisitions!

The Rocks – Again

I’ve been going over and over the rest of the photos from the wee excursion to the Rocks from the past weekend, and it seems a terrible shame to me that so many of them are left unseen. So here’s just a sampler of some of my favourites!

I apologise in advance for WordPress cutting off the right edge of my landscape photos, I’m still making tweaks to this page, and trying to sort out some of the intricacies!

The Welcome Wagon!

A taste of the newer architecture in the area.

And some of the older features.

I love the market canopy. It feels so permanent, so stable, and holds so much under it’s sails. Yet, during the week it doesn’t exist and cars drive along this road!

I adored this back pack, seen on a passing market go-er. I should have stopped her and asked her where she acquired it!

These exquisite heels were in a local art gallery just down the street. Aren’t they just spectacular?!?

The horse drawn carriage is there to remind people of a bygone era. Something a little older, a little slower paced, and the rides are remarkably reasonably priced!

As our final stop before we headed for Circular Quay, we dropped into one of the most magical places in Sydney. The Puppet Shop. I didn’t get any photos of inside, you aren’t allowed. But walking off the street, and down the rickety old stair case (which you know is original) is like entering another world. It brings a joy to my heart and peace to my being.

And the sign over the counter announced that it’s for sale …

The Rocks

We spent the most wonderful day rediscovering The Rocks Markets. There is always so much to see and do there, it is a hubbub of colour,

excitement

and possibly a little pandering to the tourist dollar!

It has extended since last I was there, around the Argyle Centre and down Argyle St. (which has been blocked off to cars. How long has it been since I went to the Rocks?!?)

We managed to procure a few bags from one of my favourite designers Pretty in Pink. I think I’ll need to purchase some lounge pants and possibly a kimono from her before Summer really kicks in too! And her aprons are to die for!

It is a wonderfully creative market, and the emphasis this week was on designers and Summer fashions.

It was ridiculously inspiring and made me want to pull out my sewing machine again! (It’s been so long) But there’s something for everyone!

At the end of the day, when the hubbub threatens to overcome, you can always meander in the direction of some of the oldest pubs in Sydney.

Until next time!

A new direction

So here I am, with a new blog for Ghoti Industries and I have yet to say anything related to the store. In my mind it’s going through an almost total re-vamp, both in contents and design, but these things take time.

Meanwhile I can tell you that I’ve been working on projects that will soon be available under some of the new sections. I have been sorting through my back catalogue of photographs and they will soon be available for purchase, printed in varying sizes. My needle work and various knitted pieces will also soon be available for sale.

Until things get a little more stable, I’ll leave you with a picture of something I’m currently working on.
