Prague – Part 2

There were some things about Prague I was prepared for, like the garnets, and the crystal. (Please note the flamingos and the goldfish at top left, none of which I bought.)

Though I can honestly say I wasn’t quite aware of just how prevalent it would be!

What I wasn’t expecting (not enough research, obviously!) was the puppets and marionettes …

… the black light theatres (Yes, there’s more than one. Yes, we went to a show.) …

… and the cannabis absinth!

So; a mellow psychoactive? I didn’t try any.

There was also a multitude of matryoshkas. This made more sense to me when I thought about it being a Slovak folk art rather than a Russian one.

On with the story! We arrived early and checked in to our first hotel (Hotel Liberty – the nicer one for the visit, and one I can thoroughly recommend), and of course needed to dump our bags there until it was actually check in time until we could shower. So after a quick breakfast, it was off and out into the city to see what we could find!

With the help of the English maps which the concierge had given us (one each, just in case!) we made it to the Astronomical Clock at Old Town Square, and decided what we really needed to do, was head inside and up the top for the birds-eye view of Prague.

So in we all trooped to purchase our tickets. Then we just all stopped and gaped.

The intricacy of the murals was breathtaking!

The view from the top wasn’t half bad either! Yes, it is another picture of the castle. I’m obsessed!

On the way down there were opportunities to take guided tours through the Old Town City Hall, which is the oldest Town Hall in Prague and gave a nice insight of just how rich and mighty Prague once was. Of course we jumped at the opportunity, and I ended up in my first two churches of the Czech Republic. The first was down in one of the dungeons. Torture devices in one room; through a small doorway and massive crucifix and saints in the next.

The cross was made from charred beams of the Town Hall and commemorates those who fell in a war.

But up above, we ended up in the small private chapel behind the Astronomical Clock. The tower was consecrated in 1381, and we were all brought to silence by the light streaming through the windows.

Inside the chapel’s nave were the sculptures of the twelve apostles which promenade across the outside of the Astonomical Clock every hour on the hour. We managed to time it just right so that not only did we have the chapel almost to ourselves while visiting, but it was also on the hour. So we saw the clock working from the inside!

Just as we were done and leaving, a tour group of maybe thirty under-twelve-year-old-school-children all trouped through talking at high pitched volume as only bored school excursions can. We counted ourselves very lucky indeed!

Then it was back to the hotel for check-in and shower time!

Prague – Part 1

With the kitties shiny new passports we were able to dump them in a cattery, and jump on a train to Prague! (We are loving parents, I swear!)

As an amusing side note, we managed to forget our own passports and may have had just a small international altercation and possibly a fine going over the first German border. (Yay for friendly German Police!) (Yes, you read that sentence correctly!) Good thing we were still awake for it given that it was a sleeper train! But we were never asked for our passports again the whole trip. So there you go.

The word that kept coming in to all our minds was “awesome”. The city was AWESOME. Such a magical fairytale city that truly looked like it had been pulled from the pages of my childhood storybooks.

The buildings are so …

… highly …

… ornamented …

and around each corner, another turret or spire piercing high into the sky (Church of Our Lady before Týn – 14th Century)!

Then wonder of wonders, the Astronomical Clock (1410).

Then high on a hill, overlooking it all, there’s Prague Castle (870 – kinda).

And the Charles Bridge (1357 – better photos to come) connects it all together.

some of the oldest buildings in the world. And I can’t even remember how many churches I’ve been in! We’ll count them together shall we? (Yes Mum, this time I got photos for you!)

Now I’m going to share that adventure with all of you!

Paris Part 3, Sunday

Another cold and blustery beginning had us contemplating our options over breakfast. Not hard to do when you consider where we were and just how many options we had at our doorstep!

Photobucket

So we wandered, but with purpose! Through the Cimetière de Montmartre

Photobucket

… around all the little alleys and cobbled streets which I love so much. It took me a while to realised one of the things I loved about them was the fact that they were on a slope! (Holland really is that flat)

Photobucket

This building was particularly spectacular!

Photobucket

Then it was up the Montmarte Funiculaire

Photobucket

… and on to the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur! Yes I was at a Church, on a Sunday, and the ground did not swallow me down into the fiery pits of Hell! Though, I didn’t tempt fate by going inside!

Photobucket

The Gargoyles looked just as menacing as they needed too. (Can I take one home with me?)

Photobucket

For those of you that are familiar with it, Montmartre is also where they filmed the movie Amelie. A scene was filmed up here! I have seen the telescope, I have walked the steps, I have seen the human statues! Check out this view of Paris!

Photobucket

Though I only went down the steps, not up them …

Photobucket

… both Himself and I did BOTH ride the two storey carousel! (My horse was the fastest! Inside track will do that for you *winks*)

Photobucket

To sum up, it was a wonderful weekend! It was harder than I would have thought though to switch from Dutch pleasantries to French ones! It has me completely determined though to learn more languages! I think it is the height of rudeness for me to rely on the fact that so far everyone in Continental Europe speaks English. After all, it’s usually their second or third language! Dutch first though! And thank goodness that Himself speaks French!

Paris Part 2, Saturday

We disembarked from the Metro at the Place de la Concorde, stopping briefly to get rained on and take pictures of a dramatic sky over the Tour Eiffel.

Photobucket

Then it was a leisurely stroll through the Jardin Des Tuileries where we stopped for coffee and to spend time with the ducks absorbing the atmosphere.

Photobucket

We happened across a free photography exhibit going on in the gardens that was a single photographer who had taken over 2 million photographs out of his single window in Korea. It was in incredible display that highlighted for us what a difference decent equipment and printing/framing can make to the end product of your photography.

It was then on to the Musée du Louvre! This was such a big thing for me! I can’t even describe to you how excited I was. Of course the thousands of other patrons that day felt similar I’m sure…

Photobucket

The queue management was exceptional, and though the line was long, we didn’t wait long to go through the metal detectors, and we were under the giant glass pyramid!

Photobucket

With limited time we headed for medieval Louvre and the Egyptian artefacts. There is so much to see that we just had to make a decision and this wing won the coin toss for this visit. Next visit I’ll see paintings. But you can’t really complain when there’s this.

Photobucket

This just reminds me that I need to work on my hand writing!

Photobucket

Walking through crowds and photographing everything we saw was taking up time though, and we had tickets that night which required a sprucing up and a change of outfit! We had tickets to dinner and a show!

Dinner was at La Fermette Beuf. And my picture of their décor simply doesn’t do the place justice! Click on the link!

Photobucket

It was incredible, and the food delicious! I suddenly want a house decorated all in Art Nouveau! Oh no, wait … I’ve always wanted that …

But we had a show to get to, and time was running out! And we discovered the hard way that seating is not reserved and we would have done well to get there earlier, and will the next time we go.

But as a birthday present to Himself, we went to the Crazy Horse! (SFW Wiki link)

Photobucket

It was an awesome show! Some skits were better than others, some held our attention better, but all in all the show was well worth the trip!

And of course, the tower is a beacon in the night.

Photobucket

One day left!

Adventure is out there!

Oh the places you’ll go, the things you’ll see! – Dr Suess

So this post may not be entirely normal, as this weekend I did something that I’ve never done before. Actually, I did several things that I’ve never done before! The first was boarding a train to travel internationally.

Photobucket

Now, this may not mean much to most people, but when you grow up in Australia, when you catch a train, you can only ever get to other parts of Australia. Even traveling in a straight line for days, you still only reach more of Australia!

Photobucket

We were on a train for just over 3 hours (a trip to Canberra), and ended up here…

Photobucket

Yes, that’s right. We went to PARIS! *has a moment* Left on Friday night after work, and were back Sunday afternoon.

We have a gift though. We crossed countries (I’ve now been through Belgium! Another first!), and changed major international city, and still wound up in the Red Light District.

Photobucket

This is the day we woke up to. Weather was threatening rain, and given a friend of mine had just left Paris a few days earlier and it had been so hot she was unable to sleep, I was grateful for the respite in the heat.

Photobucket

This is the most comfortable bed I have slept in since arriving in Europe, and I’m not afraid to admit it. I can’t wait for our stuff to arrive. And the hotel had REAL black out curtains. *cries tears of joy*

Photobucket

Over breakfast we planned out our day. Wouldn’t be France without croissants and espresso. We’ll just gloss over the fact that this is what Himself has for breakfast every day…

Photobucket

Yet again, the architecture defines the city. The beautiful ironwork balustrades, covered with plant boxes, shutters, and the windows in the rooves. This is Paris.

Photobucket

Then it as off to the Metro to begin our days excitement!

Photobucket

I can’t get over how well looked after, clean, efficient, and old the metro is!

Photobucket

This’ll be a big week for posting folks, I hope you don’t mind too much following along on our adventure! 😀
