The Diamond Museum

I’m loving Spring. We have been having the most beautiful weather. Not exactly warm, but finally consistently above zero (even if that does mean 5C).

Actually seeing the seasons change is quite remarkable! And you don’t even know you’re missing it in Australia!

As you can see above, it was a glorious Spring day, and we were wondering what we could do. Himself hit upon going to the Diamond Museum as it’s connected to our Museum Cards.

Rembrandtplein – The Night Watch

In Rembrandtplein beneath a statue of the artist himself there is a bronze-cast of his most famous painting; The Night Watch.

It was created in 2006 as part of the celebration of the artist’s 400th birthday.

This bronze-cast representation of the famous painting was on display for three-years before traveling to New York City, Moscow and Oranienbaum, Russia. In 2012, the bronze Nightwatch sculptures returned to the redesigned square where they serve as a magnet for visitors. In January 2013, the Rembrandtplein Entrepreneurs Foundation began a fundraiser to keep the sculptures in the square throughout the year.

This is one of only two remaining wooden buildings left in Amsterdam. This one is up on the Zeedijk (translated “Sea Wall”). After massive fires swept through in 1452, the town fathers realised that brick didn’t burn as well, and the rest is history.

The only other wooden building in Amsterdam is in the Begijnhof Court.

No matter what the temperature tells me, Mother Nature is telling me that it’s Spring!

So much has happened since getting back from Prague! We still had our travel companions staying with us for several days once we returned home, but we continued on with our normal weekly routine as well, so there were still Language classes for me in amongst all the sight seeing.

When our friends headed back to Australia that was when the plague descended upon the household. I don’t remember much of that week. I was sick enough that I didn’t make it to my first Dutch Class. I had no voice, and I didn’t really think anyone else wanted to get my fever or cough.

That week though, ended with some other friends in town who I haven’t seen in years! It really is a wonderful experience to be able to show off our beautiful city to people we have known since childhood, but not seen or really spoken to in fifteen years.
