Today’s Table

Today’s table has more painting.

But may have been interrupted by the first snow of 2013. This is our backyard!

Photobucket

Everything looks so clean and white!

Unlike the (laughable) blizzard back at the beginning of December, that snow began falling last night and hasn’t really let up since! It’s gotten lighter, and heavier at times, but I may actually get a decent covering and finally be able to make my snow minions ala Calvin!

If only Himself weren’t too unwell with the office lurgy to assist me! So I left him to his lurgy while I went off to tour the canals! Aren’t they stunning?

Photobucket

And this.

Photobucket

The locals seemed to notice not a jot!

Photobucket

I found a picture once on Pinterest of this being done, and promised myself that the next time there was enough snow, I’d put “Cars” eyes on a car.

Photobucket

Close enough!

PS – My new snow boots and 18 year old ski jacket are the awesomest things I currently own, besides my camera 😉

natura ARTIS magistra

We went back to Artis on the weekend with a friend who we haven’t seen in months! It was a lovely way to catch up and spend the day together, running around like lunatics with cameras! If we continue going to Artis at this rate, we may as well just get annual passes!

There had been news reports earlier in the week that this is the second warmest Winter on record, and all the animals and plants were getting confused. I think this was illustrated really neatly within the walls of the zoo! There were blossoms blooming, and animals behaving like rabbits! (It was hard not to get photos of it really …) But I shall spare you all that, as the weekend we decided to end up at the zoo was determined to be the first real cold snap of Winter. Oh yeah. This meant layers and layers of clothing people! I may need to finally shop for actual winter clothes. Let’s hope I can still find some in the shops!

But on with the photos!

Many of the animals who were outside looked like this …

Photobucket

… huddled for warmth.

All in thick, fluffly, winter coats.

Photobucket

I’m including this shot of the otter because I’m in shock that he held still long enough for me to get a photo! It’s an otter after all!

Photobucket

All the big cats looked like they needed big warm snugly beds to curl up in. My own cats have obviously trained me well!

Photobucket

Being as cold as it was, we spent a fair amount of time in the “houses”. We started in the small animal house, which we had been shooed out of the last time we were at the zoo, when they found us still in there after the zoo had closed!

We then wended our way to the bird, reptile, and monkey house where you could walk around in amongst the vines and trees with the animals there with you! (So difficult to restrain yourself from reaching out and patting the tiny monkeys!)

This bird strongly reminded me of the dinos in Jurassic Park the way he looked out from behind the plants.

Photobucket

So many of the birds were complete cam whores who posed beautifully for our cameras!

Photobucket

But it was outside in the cold where I found my holy grail! We had missed them the last time we were in the zoo compound, but I got to see my flamingos!

Photobucket

The poor blighters looked FREEZING! They were all squished together and reduced to football shaped! I took so many photos! I’m hoping these will be inspiring for my painting later this week!

The meekats came out briefly when they heard us.

Photobucket

But disappeared just as quickly when they discovered how chill it was out of their house!

And though there was lots of “animals thinking it was spring” going on, this blog is child friendly, so I’ll just put here this photos of the stags fighting it out for dominance!

Photobucket

It was a wonderful day out, and though we have now been to Artis twice, we still have yet to see everything is has to offer! We shall just have to resign ourselves to going back again. Oh the hardships of our life! 😉

Today’s Table

I thought I’d show you some of the things I’ve been working on. I also thought that if I made myself show you what I’m working on each week, it is the incentive I need to have something finished to show you! This will also help me make smaller projects that finish faster to help me not get bogged down in projects like the never ending shawl which I have now been working on for over a year! Sometimes the unending projects can be soul draining. Instant gratification can really help (in small doses)!

With that in mind, I’ve been working on some watercolour illustrations which I’m hoping to have up on Ghoti Industries and Etsy for sale shortly. I’m really digging flamingos at the moment. Had you guessed?

Photobucket

There’s also this pair of mittens which I began just before Christmas to have something small to work on that was easily transportable to knit night. Of course, I haven’t had the time of energy to go to knit night since beginning them, but that’s okay. I’ll get there next week.

Photobucket

Sorry that picture’s so dark. I ran out of sunlight when I put lunch on for a friend!

So what are you all working on? What are you up to with yourselves?

Things we do for fun

When we have a spare moment (and we have to plan make them happen) Himself and Myself are prone to strapping our favourite wheels to our feet and heading for the park.

Photobucket

My wheels are different to His, because I’m a klutz and may at any point need to be suddenly stationary to not run into trees or other pedestrians. I know this about myself. I’m working with it.

Yes, I’m aware this photos is fuzzy. The problem is I wasn’t aware until after we got home.

Photobucket

The inherent problem with strapping wheels to yourself is that it limits the amount of photos one can take. We made great time though! 😀 These were taken the day before New Years Eve. The last Sunday of the old year.

New Years Day we decided to go back to the park but walk to see if we could find some of the devastation resultant from the explosions the night before. You see, fireworks are legal in the Netherlands. And though you are only meant to let them off within about a 2 hour period around midnight … they went off all day on the 31st December. They finally quietened enough for us to sleep around 2am I think. The cats just had the best day that day!

So we left the house on the first, and found this.

Photobucket

And when I read up on it later, apparently ex-christmas tree bonfires are prevalent on New Years Eve too. Though it looks like they couldn’t get this one to catch.

Photobucket

All those little red bits are the paper of cracker casings. Don’t fool yourself into thinking someone just exploded their mother’s rose garden!

The ducks seemed to be recovering nicely though, even with the odd bang still going off.

Photobucket

Vondel Park was a hive of activity. So many families all out promenading along the avenues, and the local dog walking crew were getting together for a New Years Day picnic.

Photobucket

We saw lots of bird life. I thought they would have flown South for the Winter, but I guess it’s not cold enough? I keep forgetting to take bread to feed them too!

Photobucket

As the sun was setting, and the temperature dropping …

Photobucket

we headed off to a nearby café that looked warm and inviting enough that it was packed! We were quite lucky to get a table!

Photobucket

After a hot chocolate and some kroketjes we headed on home to the central heating and three very anxious cats.

Next year I hit up the vet for kitty valium!

2012 in brief

What a year! Where does one even begin? There is so much that has happened, and so many simply massive changes in our lives.

We are immensely grateful to all our family and friends who have held us and supported us through this year of upheaval, even when they were less than willing to really let us go.

It is an age of wonder we live in, when we can just switch on the computer and we find our families and friends just waiting to talk and chat with us like we were all in the same room. I’m sure this has helped more than anything to alleviate the effects of homesickness and culture shock. Though the odd care package hasn’t gone astray either! Thank you everyone!

It’s been a year of firsts for us. (in no particular order)

• First house (apartment) for Himself.
• First time in Europe for me.
• First time in Dubai too. (Do stopovers count?)
• First trip to a country whose first language isn’t English (and isn’t a colony of the Commonwealth).
• Longest flight for me.
• First international train trip.
• First time in Paris.
• First Dutch wedding.
• First snow.
• First Summer birthday for me.
• Driving on the wrong side of the road …

Some of the sights we’ve seen for the first time included
• The World Heritage listed canals of Amsterdam.
• Rijksmuseum.
• Windmills.
• Nemo.
• Artis.
• De Keukenhoff.
• Le Louvre.
• Eiffel Tower.
• My first Palace!
• Sacre Coeur.
• Montmartre.

We’ve observed/taken part in our first
• Queen’s Day.
• Liberation Day.
• Amsterdam Pride.
• Turning on the Lights.
• Sinterklaas.
• Christmas Light Parade.

… and of course there has been much, much more.

It’s hard to know what to say in a blog post, more difficult than I could have imagined to sum up in words; But if I could share the feeling of love and security with all of you over the airwaves and cables of the internet I would.

Thank you all for your love and support this year, and may 2013 bring you peace, joy, and happiness.

Hope to see you all again in the New Year! May the Adventures continue!
