Grocery Shopping

A quick simple trip to the supermarket has changed a bit since moving to Amsterdam. First, I never used to go to the grocery store for the major weekly shop. I’d get Coles, and then later Woolies to deliver it to me. (nasty supermarkets full of annoying people and queues!)

So when I got here, I needed to start grocery shopping again. Hindered a little by the language, though in all honesty, packaging is the same everywhere. And if you can’t see the product to figure out what it is (chicken fillets or vegetables) there’ll be a picture of what is in the packaging on the front. Mostly we eat fresh though, so no problems there.

What hindered me more initially was the fact that whatever I bought, I had to carry home. In our first apartment, that was up 4 flights of really steep stairs, in the second apartment that was a kilometer and a half home (though then I also used Mavis the bicycle). There’s only so much will fit in paniers.

In our third apartment we now live close and it’s only two flights of stairs. I also managed to get the kitty litter delivered to us (this relieved much of the weight!).

What I have found is that groceries here are either in bulk, or are in daily/two day serves. Which is awesome! Nothing goes off before you eat it, but you also end up back at the grocery store every other day. I guess given the size of the kitchen and the storage capacity, this makes sense. Like so. Standard household vegetables look like this.

In some ways this is incredibly convenient! With just the two of us, a loaf of bread would go off before we ate it, and often used to. But when you can buy a half loaf, there’s no such wastage!

Photobucket

Though I’ve yet to be convinced by what the locals put on their bread, I know my niece and nephew love hagelslag and vlokken. Check out all the types and flavours! (*shudders*)

Photobucket

I can get behind the massive cheese selection though! This is only about a third of this market’s display. The Dutch are wacky for their cheese! But there’s no cheddar or tasty. Cooking-wise this took a little adjustment.

Photobucket

Which goes well with the supermarket wine selection. I know it’s fuzzy, but all of these shelves are Australian wine. Rosemount, Yalumba, Lindemans. You name it.

Photobucket

I can’t think why, but this one scares me.

Photobucket

Though we’re no longer living with the Pyrmont Fish Markets just down the road, we do have other options in walking distance. We’ve bought a few pieces of fish here. They also have a good selection of more esoteric things like rabbit, hare, duck, and some delectable truffle crisps!

Photobucket

They are also the closest source of the widest selection of herbs.

Photobucket

But through all the learning of new customs, and new ways of doing things, the thing that I still haven’t gotten used to is the tea stations in Albert Heijn.

Photobucket

Yes. They expect you to stop your grocery shopping, with a basket full of things out of the fridge section which you’ve already been through, and have a complimentary tea!

natura ARTIS magistra

We went back to Artis on the weekend with a friend who we haven’t seen in months! It was a lovely way to catch up and spend the day together, running around like lunatics with cameras! If we continue going to Artis at this rate, we may as well just get annual passes!

There had been news reports earlier in the week that this is the second warmest Winter on record, and all the animals and plants were getting confused. I think this was illustrated really neatly within the walls of the zoo! There were blossoms blooming, and animals behaving like rabbits! (It was hard not to get photos of it really …) But I shall spare you all that, as the weekend we decided to end up at the zoo was determined to be the first real cold snap of Winter. Oh yeah. This meant layers and layers of clothing people! I may need to finally shop for actual winter clothes. Let’s hope I can still find some in the shops!

But on with the photos!

Many of the animals who were outside looked like this …

Photobucket

… huddled for warmth.

All in thick, fluffly, winter coats.

Photobucket

I’m including this shot of the otter because I’m in shock that he held still long enough for me to get a photo! It’s an otter after all!

Photobucket

All the big cats looked like they needed big warm snugly beds to curl up in. My own cats have obviously trained me well!

Photobucket

Being as cold as it was, we spent a fair amount of time in the “houses”. We started in the small animal house, which we had been shooed out of the last time we were at the zoo, when they found us still in there after the zoo had closed!

We then wended our way to the bird, reptile, and monkey house where you could walk around in amongst the vines and trees with the animals there with you! (So difficult to restrain yourself from reaching out and patting the tiny monkeys!)

This bird strongly reminded me of the dinos in Jurassic Park the way he looked out from behind the plants.

Photobucket

So many of the birds were complete cam whores who posed beautifully for our cameras!

Photobucket

But it was outside in the cold where I found my holy grail! We had missed them the last time we were in the zoo compound, but I got to see my flamingos!

Photobucket

The poor blighters looked FREEZING! They were all squished together and reduced to football shaped! I took so many photos! I’m hoping these will be inspiring for my painting later this week!

The meekats came out briefly when they heard us.

Photobucket

But disappeared just as quickly when they discovered how chill it was out of their house!

And though there was lots of “animals thinking it was spring” going on, this blog is child friendly, so I’ll just put here this photos of the stags fighting it out for dominance!

Photobucket

It was a wonderful day out, and though we have now been to Artis twice, we still have yet to see everything is has to offer! We shall just have to resign ourselves to going back again. Oh the hardships of our life! 😉

2012 in brief

What a year! Where does one even begin? There is so much that has happened, and so many simply massive changes in our lives.

We are immensely grateful to all our family and friends who have held us and supported us through this year of upheaval, even when they were less than willing to really let us go.

It is an age of wonder we live in, when we can just switch on the computer and we find our families and friends just waiting to talk and chat with us like we were all in the same room. I’m sure this has helped more than anything to alleviate the effects of homesickness and culture shock. Though the odd care package hasn’t gone astray either! Thank you everyone!

It’s been a year of firsts for us. (in no particular order)

• First house (apartment) for Himself.
• First time in Europe for me.
• First time in Dubai too. (Do stopovers count?)
• First trip to a country whose first language isn’t English (and isn’t a colony of the Commonwealth).
• Longest flight for me.
• First international train trip.
• First time in Paris.
• First Dutch wedding.
• First snow.
• First Summer birthday for me.
• Driving on the wrong side of the road …

Some of the sights we’ve seen for the first time included
• The World Heritage listed canals of Amsterdam.
• Rijksmuseum.
• Windmills.
• Nemo.
• Artis.
• De Keukenhoff.
• Le Louvre.
• Eiffel Tower.
• My first Palace!
• Sacre Coeur.
• Montmartre.

We’ve observed/taken part in our first
• Queen’s Day.
• Liberation Day.
• Amsterdam Pride.
• Turning on the Lights.
• Sinterklaas.
• Christmas Light Parade.

… and of course there has been much, much more.

It’s hard to know what to say in a blog post, more difficult than I could have imagined to sum up in words; But if I could share the feeling of love and security with all of you over the airwaves and cables of the internet I would.

Thank you all for your love and support this year, and may 2013 bring you peace, joy, and happiness.

Hope to see you all again in the New Year! May the Adventures continue!

Christmas Canal Parade

We went to the Canal Parade on Saturday night which was wending its way down the Prinsengracht.

Photobucket

It was on as part of the Amsterdam Light Festival which is on at the moment.

Photobucket

We positioned ourselves at the bottom of the Negen Straatjes hoping to get a good position from which to see.

Photobucket

The initial rain shower was disconcerting, but it didn’t hang around long thank goodness!

Photobucket

As the boats and floats wound around the water ways and under our bridge, we had a good view to see the lights, and sing along with the bands!

Photobucket

The fire twirlers filled me with happy memories of going to watch friends perform. The smell of the kerosene brought a smile to my face

Photobucket

Santa made an appearance and waved to the crowd while wishing us all a Merry Christmas.

Photobucket

The parade came to its conclusion with a boat that had red and green lasers pointed at mirror balls. It was a sight to see all those pinpoints reflected onto all the canal houses!

Photobucket

The photo doesn’t really do it justice, so I got footage for you! (I love you all that much!)

But before you watch it, I’m going to issue a seizure warning. It’s got a steady flash to it if you’re susceptible to such things.

The one thing we both forgot (or didn’t think about) was to take tripods to hold the cameras still for really low light shots! (There is a multitude of fuzzy photos which will never see the light of day!)

Sinterklaas

I probably should have mentioned this earlier, but we got into the swing of things last week and had a visit from Sinterklass (and probably Zwarte Piet came along too). We put our newly acquired clogs out by the fireplace to see what would happen, and lo and behold we awoke to find them full of goodies!

Photobucket

We each got a chocolate letter of our initials, an orange, some walnuts, and a DVD! Thoroughly spoilt! *grins*

We have also cleared a space and put up our Giftmas tree. I was grateful that I only lost one of my glass ornaments in the move!

Photobucket

Miraculously it seemed to attract a multitude of gifts to it almost instantly! Though, these have subsequently gone into the post, bound for far away lands!

Now to restrain myself from putting on my Twisted Sister Christmas album so Himself doesn’t get sick of it too quickly!
